| NORTHEAST OHIO ENGLISH COCKER SPANIEL FANCIERS CLUB HISTORY In mid 1979 The Northeast Ohio English Cocker Spaniel Fanciers began, probably like most clubs, informally at a local match. These individuals, one of them still a member, were talking about a specialty match and the cost of clinics and seminars. “If we all got together, we could accomplish and learn more” one of them said. And that is what has been happening for some twenty seven years now. The clubs first slate of offices were: Christine Darmstadt (now Mickolick), President; Karen Roth, Vice President; Pat Garry, Treasurer; and Pat Piazza, Secretary. The clubs first match was held at Riddlefield in the fall of 1980 with Lou Smith as the conformation judge. Since that time, the club has held an annual specialty match with all breed obedience each spring. Several of the match judges have gone on to become recognized breed judges. The club newsletter began as a quarterly publication in 1981 but has most recently been published on a monthly basis. In addition to the minutes from regular meetings and board meetings and the treasurers report the newsletter contains news of coming events; show results, match and trial wins and placements; litter and breeding news; and reprints ( with permission) of interesting articles. The club adopted a formal Constitution and By-Laws in 1983. In 1984 the club first hosted and supported the English Cocker entry at the Medina, Ohio summer show. This included the submission of suggested judges, trophies for classes and the highest scoring English Cocker. The July 19, 1986 Medina show was hosted by the club and officially supported through the ECSCA with the conformation judge being Anne Rodgers Clark. There were majors in both sexes at that show. In 1984 the club formed a mutually beneficial relationship with the English Setter Club of Ohio. Many events were co-sponsored by the two clubs to include speakers, and fall fun field days. In 1986 to promote local breeders and as a service to Ohio veterinarians, the club published its first all breed breeders directory. Ads were published, for a nominal fee, compiled into a directory which was then mailed to nearly all of the veterinarians in the state of Ohio. The directory was repeated in early 1993. In 1990 the club began holding an annual Fall Fun Day which promotes any and all activities involving dogs. Some of the recent activities included field work, tracking, an obstacle course, and canine good citizenship and therapy dog certification. In 1991 the club formed its first rescue-education committee which was headed by a dedicated member. The committee was active throughout Ohio and was involved in several successful rescues and placements. In addition to rescue and placement the committee was active in advocacy and education at all gatherings where there were prospective dog owners. In 1992 the committee received payment for services and this payment along with a club donation was sent to the ECSCA to assist in their rescue work. Club members continue to support ECSCA through fostering, rescuing and through personal and club donations. In September, 1992 the club adopted its first Code of Ethics, written by the club members and adopted unanimously. Efforts in 1993 were directed toward the long time goal of submitting the required packet with the request to host our first National Specialty. This packet was approved and the club hosted the national that was held in Berea, Ohio in 1996. Although the club lost the original site that was proposed, only three months prior to the date of the national, the members pulled together and were successful, judging by later comments in holding the show at the fairgrounds. The next project that consumed 1997 until late 1999 was for the club to become AKC sanctioned and be approved as a member club of ECSCA. The club held their match, submitted the constitution and by-laws and became approved in October, 1999. In December of 2000 the club held its first specialty in conjunction with Western Reserve Kennel Club. We have traditionally supported the other shows held during the weekend and hosted a luncheon along with a raffle after judging on Saturday. The shows usually draw majors and have had entries from as far away as Alaska. In 2001 the Northeast Ohio English Cocker Spaniel Fanciers became a member club of the English Cocker Spaniel Club of America. Throughout the years the club has hosted speakers on grooming, judging, health concerns and genetics and held demonstrations on tracking, agility, obedience and field work. Each year the club has held a specialty match in the spring and our annual specialty in conjunction with the Western Reserve/Cleveland Classic shows and supported the other shows held during that weekend. |
